Philosophy

Family Child Development Center is an educational non-profit, non-denominational child care center open to all children.  Our program is purposely flexible so that each child may grow and develop at his/her own pace.  In fact, FCDC features its "Little Learners Program" -- an individualized development plan is developed for every little learner, in consultation with parents.

The FCDC staff has carefully chosen equipment and planned curriculum to provide a wide variety of experiences for the child six weeks through five years of age.  It is our belief that, with the appropriate learning environment and the guidance of professionally trained staff, each child will realize his/her potential for growth -- physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.
FCDC prides itself in providing lower child to teacher ratios than required by state regulations and most other childcare centers.  We use a team-teaching approach in our classrooms.  In addition, FCDC has a child development coordinator on staff, partially funded with a grant from Hennepin County, who helps our teachers support our children who have special needs.  Both of these unique features help provide a very nurturing environment for all children to develop, grow and learn.

FCDC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administrations of its educational policies, admissions or other school-administered programs.

Programs Offered

Full & Part-Time Child Care and Development
FCDC's full and part- time child care program meets the needs of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.  Children can be cared for up to 9 1/2 hours a day between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.  Breakfast, hot lunches and snacks are served daily by our in-house cook.

Children transition to new classrooms as they reach milestones in their development and seek new opportunities.  Teachers and parents work together to plan transitions to the next classroom.  Monthly field trips are built into the curriculum; nominal fees are added if there is a required admission.

Tigger 2s Kindergarten-Readiness Nursery School

FCDC offers a Kindergarten-Readiness Nursery School program that runs concurrently with the school year (September through May).  This class is for older preschoolers bound for kindergarten the next fall.

Tigger 2s meets Monday through Thursday each week, 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.  The maximum class size is 18 and the teacher-child ratio is 1 to 9.

Other Information

Daily Activities
Our program's written curriculum plans are based on knowledge of child development and from assessment of children's individual needs and interests.  The daily schedule provides a balance of activities with alternating periods of quiet and active play, large and small muscle activities, child initiated and staff initiated play.  All groups play outdoors daily, weather permitting.

Health and Nutrition
Family Child Development Center strongly believes that good nutrition is a cornerstone to good health and that eating together is an important social experience.  Daily snacks, sometimes prepared by the children, are planned with these beliefs in mind.  In addition, steps are taken to meet every child's food needs and/or allergies.  Our full-time program provides breakfast and hot lunch plus an afternoon snack.  For those children in our Time For Me program, parents will be asked to provide a lunch.

Holiday Observances, Religious and Non-Religious
Holidays are special times of the year when people set aside work to come together with family, friends, and community to recognize a new year, a change of season, a religious rite, a life event or the contribution of significant people.  At FCDC, we feel these events are important to the children and families and offer our staff a unique opportunity to broaden the children's cultural awareness and sensitivity.  It is our intent to celebrate and learn about a broad spectrum of traditions and beliefs.  We strive to use parents, staff, and community resources to reflect the diversity our children will experience as they explore their place in the larger community.  Families will be kept informed through the monthly newsletter and curriculum plans posted in the classrooms of the planned activities and are invited to play an active part in our program.  It is FCDC's responsibility, at the time of enrollment, to inform families of our Holiday Policy.  It is the family's responsibility to determine if our policy and practices best serve your needs.  It is our goal to form a partnership with the FCDC families and actively seek your knowledge and opinions when developing our curriculum.
